Updating truck safety skills is vital

If you are a truck driver or the driver of another type of commercial vehicle, you will have already had to go through rigorous safety and competence training to ensure that you can be safe on the road.

Trucks have the capacity to do an enormous amount of damage; therefore, drivers should not just rely on their initial training but also make sure that they are reminding themselves of key procedures and learning more about truck driving standards.

What are truck driving standards?

Safe truck driving techniques have been widely documented. They describe the minimum standards that are necessary to be a safe driver of a commercial vehicle. In summary, truck driving standards demand that a truck driver operates his or her vehicle defensively. This means that they actively avoid potentially risky conditions, rather than seeing it as the other driver's fault. Therefore, a truck driver should be constantly looking out for potential hazards and dangers that could have been brought about by external conditions or the actions of other drivers.

Many of these conditions have been explained in the Code of Federal Regulations Title 49 (CFR49), otherwise known as the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSR). This document also explains that all truck drivers should be equipped with all the necessary skills to operate their vehicle safely.

Maintaining the correct truck driving standards and updating your training frequently will help prevent accidents. If you are concerned about an accident that has taken place and where the liability lies, you should research the circumstances of the situation and see how the law applies.
