When we are out in pubic, whether we are jogging, walking or relaxing, it is impossible for us to be able to control the environment. We can only hope that the people around us are smart enough to make responsible and wise choices.
This is also true for situations in which dogs are present. While we cannot control whether dogs will be vicious or aggressive, we can only hope that their owners make smart choices that keep people safe from their dogs.
What causes dogs to attack?
All dog breeds and personalities are different. For some dogs, seeing a person in motion, for example when they are running, means that their prey instinct is triggered. Just because this instinct is triggered does not mean that they will attack, however. All dogs can be trained out of these behaviors, and it can be considered negligent if a dog owner does not train his or her dog adequately.
How can I prevent being bitten by a dog?
It is always important to stay calm if you are confronted by an aggressive dog. Do not try to attack in defense, because this will likely trigger an even more aggressive reaction from the dog. Try to claim back your own space by calmly making your arms wide. You can also stand sideways to show less aggression, while keeping your eye on the dog.
If you have been bitten by a dog, you may want to consider whether the dog’s owner was being negligent and caused this accident to happen. If a dog is aggressive, it should be kept on a leash at all times.
