A woman got into a fatal accident in Newport News, Virginia, and now she is facing serious charges.

According to reports, the woman was behind the wheel of a 2013 Chrysler 200 on June 8. It was about 1:30 in the morning. She was driving down Interstate 664.

There were a few problems, foremost of which is that she was traveling the wrong way. She had somehow gotten her Chrysler on the highway going north even though she was in the southbound lanes. There, her car slammed head-on into a 2008 Honda Accord.

The man in that Accord passed away in the accident. The woman allegedly attempted to flee from the crash scene, but the authorities located her over at Sentara Hampton Careplex. She was then arrested and is now facing DWI charges and involuntary manslaughter charges. In addition, she has been given a felony for failing to stop at an accident that resulted in a fatality and she got a civil violation when she refused to consent to a breath test or a blood test.

Many wrong-way accidents involve drunk drivers. The road signs are fairly clear, and even someone who misread the signs would usually figure out his or her mistake rather quickly in a sober state of mind. Even so, statistics show that these wrong-way accidents, which are among the most devastating people can be involved in, happen anywhere from 300 to 400 times per year — and that’s just counting fatal accidents.

If you lose a loved one in a wrong-way DUI crash, make sure you know all of the legal options you have.
